Eatery of the week - O Velho Eurico, Lisbon

When a once beloved tasca was about to close its doors, young chef Zé Paulo Rocha came to the rescue and bought O Velho Eurico back to life. Serving excellent versions of classic Portuguese grubs, Rocha and his team pioneer the new Portuguese kitchen.

Located on the eastern hills of Lisbon and not yet known to many of the city guides, O Velho Eurico is a must-visit. Along with his chef brothers in arms, Rocha and the bunch are known as the NewKidsOnTheBlock Portugal - short: nkotb.pt. (link https://www.instagram.com/nkotb.pt/)

What to order?

Enjoy the arroz de pato, bacalhau à Brás, and their drool worthy juicy lamb croquettes, this spot has a queue before it opens.

Creator of the week - Jean-Michel Basquiat

When looking at Jean-Michel Basquiat’s The Ring (1981), one can’t help but see a revelation, a self-portrait of sorts ushering in a new era for black artists the world over. There, standing in a bold, red boxing ring is a polka-dot-shorts-wearing athlete holding a spear high above his wild-haired head.

The image of boxing alone naturally leads one to conjure up images of struggle, challenge, resistance, and undoubtedly victory and strength.

Without question, these would become the unmistakable touchstones of Basquiat’s work.

They defined him not only as a breaker of cultural and professional barriers but as the first contemporary black art star.

EATERY OF THE WEEK - Bar Brutal, Barcelona

Bar Brutal is a game-changing wine bar that kick-started the city’s heady natural wine scene. The driving force behind Brutal were Max and Stefano Colombo, two brothers from Italy’s Veneto region – Max is a chef, Stefano is a sommelier – who recognised an opportunity to introduce Barcelona to the pleasures of organically farmed, zero-additive wines from around the world...

The cozy bar does offer some delicious tapas that one can pair with the natural wines, which go perfectly together.

What to order?

Go for the bread basket that comes with jamón, the baba ghanoush, and sea bass paired with your favourite natural wine.

Wyomia Tyus 1968b

Creator of the week - Wyomia Tyus

Only six individuals worldwide have achieved the remarkable feat of winning the 100m dash in consecutive Olympic Games, with Wyomia Tyus leading the charge in 1964 and 1968.

At the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City, Tyus not only secured victory in the 100 meters but also set a dazzling world record of 11.08 seconds. Adding to the excitement, she sported dark shorts instead of the team-issued white ones, making a bold statement for human rights.

Just two days later, the Olympic stage witnessed another iconic moment when John Carlos and Tommie Smith raised their fists in a powerful gesture. This unforgettable scene unfolded after Tyus's incredible 100-meter win. However, their bold protest led to their expulsion from the Olympic Village.

The 1968 Olympics, fueled by Tyus's record-breaking performance and the courageous actions of Carlos and Smith, remains a thrilling and impactful chapter in sports history.

Creator of the Week - Jürgen Teller

The german photographer Juergen Teller lives and works in London and has successfully navigated both the fine art and commercial world since beginning of his career in the late 1980s.

Teller does not distinguish between his commercial and non-commercial work, treating all of his subjects - family members, celebrities, and himself - with a uniform style of grit and raw emotion that has become his iconic and instantly recognisable aesthetic.

Restaurant of the week - Vecchio, Paris

Vecchio, with its refined décor reminiscent of a traditional bistro, is the joint creation of France Top Chef Gianmarco Gorni, who has his roots in Italy, and Hubert Niveleau, a genius gastro character who adds his influence by his years in New York to the pop-up restaurant. Their shared vision results in a fusion cuisine that combines Italian authenticity with distinct New York accents. The menu features sophisticated cocktails, antipasti, and Italian-American-influenced dishes.

What to order?

Their famous Pasta alla Vodka, Arancinos, a giant pizza with pepperoni and jalapeño and their top-notch Negroni. A true must-try when in Paris.

Creator of the Week - Daniel Arsham

NEW YORK BASED ARTIST DANIEL ARSHAM STRADDLES THE LINE BETWEEN ART, ARCHITECTURE AND PERFORMANCE. Simple yet paradoxical gestures dominate his sculptural work: a façade that appears to billow in the wind, a figure wrapped up in the surface of a wall, a contemporary object cast in volcanic ash as if it was found on some future archeological site.
